Epilepsy and frequent seizures can’t stop young rugby player

rugbyHe plays only a few minutes a game, but Tristan Kasa may be the toughest player on the Torrey Pines Varsity Rugby Team.

The 17-year old flanker was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 7 and now, despite heavy medication, averages “two-three seizures a week,” according to his father, Steve Kasa.

College-bound Winston School graduate, The Headmaster’s Award recipient and drama standout Lukasz Augustine expected the worst when he first started attending the school for students with learning differences seven years ago. Botanic garden sculpture was a campus work in progress – North County Times, July 8, 2012

Karate Black Belt, Life Scout and TV producer among accomplishments achieved by student with Asperger syndrome – Del Mar Times, February 3, 2012

Winston School junior Tim Higgins is a Karate Black Belt Level 8, a Life Scout (one step before Eagle), and he produces television shows for Del Mar TV.  He also scuba dives, and volunteers at the YMCA, as well as for the White Sea Bass Project.  And he shares a passion for trains with his father, volunteering weekends as a docent cashier/tour guide for the San Diego Vintage Trolley. Read the full article here (External Link) PDF

Life on the Autism Spectrum: Diagnosis Murder – East County Magazine, February 2, 2012

I recently read a New York Times article that every Autistic and Asperger’s person, and their families and friends, should read. It’s troubling to say the least. A panel appointed by the American Psychiatric Association is looking to redefine Autism for its newest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Summer arts program offered – North County Times, June 2, 2010

The Winston School Teacher Dan Peragine’s Sculpture Selected for Display in the “Sculpture in the Garden” Exhibit at the San Diego Botanic Garden

Veteran Winston School visual and digital arts teacher Dan Peragine was selected as one of 23 regional artists to participate in the San Diego Botanic Garden’s fifth “Sculpture in the Garden” exhibit. The exhibit, which runs July 9, 2012 through April 15, 2013, features sculptural creations placed throughout the garden’s 37-acre setting against a backdrop of dragon trees, rare fruit gardens, and bamboo groves.

Winston Secures Del Mar Campus

The Winston School announced today that it had secured its permanent home in Del Mar after a successful community campaign that resulted in the purchase of the Shores property by the City of Del Mar. The City and the Del Mar Union School District closed escrow on the Shores Property, which includes the Winston School campus.
